The First Tee Junior Open Series is designed for Roanoke area youth, ages 5-18, to learn about, practice and play competitive golf.  Our schedule offers a variety of 6-Hole and 9-Hole events which provide youth with on-course opportunities to develop and improve their game in a fun and friendly atmosphere. Junior golfers do not need to be First Tee participants to play. 

2024 Junior Open 9-Hole Events | Ages 10-18

DIVISIONS:
Futures: Ages 10-11 / Boys & Girls / Stroke play / Caddie required
Prep: Ages 12-13 / Boys & Girls / Stroke Play / Caddie recommended
Medalist: Ages 14 & up / Boys & Girls / Stroke Play / Caddie optional

Tournament Fee: $15 for First Tee Participants and $20 for Non-Participants

What is the tournament format?

9-Hole: Stroke play. Triple bogey max on each hole.

6-Hole: Stroke play or Scramble format depending on the tournament; see tournament schedule for clarity.  Triple bogey max on each hole.

What yardages will my child play from?

Futures – ages 10 – 11 boys and girls; caddie required

Boys 10-11 (1700-2000 yds.)
Girls 10-11 (1200-1500 yds.)

Prep – ages 12-13 boys and girls; caddie recommended

Boys 12-13 (2100-2400 yds.)
Girls 12-13 (1700-2000 yds.)

Medalist – ages 14 & up boys and girls; caddie optional

Boys 16 & up – (2900-3200 yds.)
Boys 14 -15 – (2500-2800 yds.)
Girls 14 & up – (2100-2400 yds.)

Mini-Open Series – all holes at our First Tee short course are less than 100 yards

Where are the tournaments played?

9-Hole:  Area courses in the Roanoke Valley including Roanoke Country Club, River Course, Hidden Valley, Ole Monterey, Ashley Plantation, Blue Hills, Blacksburg and Hanging Rock

6-Hole:  All events are played at our First Tee short course

Who can be a caddie?

Caddies can include a parent, relative, or family friend with golf experience.   In addition, please understand that caddies cannot ride in carts.  All caddies must walk the course with the player.

Are the tournaments broken into age groups?

Yes!  Each event is broken into divisions based upon age. *Note:  You may always ask to play up a division – just email Coach Bill!

What prizes will be awarded?

Overall Junior Open Series Prizes: Three grand prizes will be awarded by drawing at the Red, White and Blue Open in November. Players will be entered into the drawing each time they participate in and Junior Open Series Event. Only one prize per person. In the event a name is drawn twice, the player will have their choice of prizes to accept.

Grand Prizes include:

  • Play and Stay for two at a Virginia resort
  • PING USA stand bag
  • Prize Basket containing gift certificates for golf rounds, assorted gifts cards and more

Overall Mini-Junior Open Grand Prizes will be awarded in the same manner, with only one prize per person. Mini-Junior Open Grand Prizes include:

  • FREE Class registration for a First Tee class or camp
  • FREE entry into a 2025 Junior Open Event
  • Prize Basket containing candy, gift certificate for golf rounds and more

Medals will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each division for the Junior Open 9-hole events. There are no prizes for the Links Fore Fun division.

Ribbons will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place per division for each Mini-Junior Open 6-hole event. There are no prizes for the Links Fore Fun division.

Does this tour have a points system?

No, it does not.  We are unique in that we operate on a “ticket” system and the more events you play in, the more tickets you receive, and the more chances you have to win prizes at the end of the season!  (see “Awards & Prizes” FAQ section)

How much does it cost?

First Tee Participants:
9-Hole tournament: $15
6-Hole tournament: $5

Active First Tee participants qualify for this reduced tournament fee (available to those who have participated in a class or are registered for one this year). As an added benefit, First Tee – Roanoke Valley participants will automatically be enrolled in the Youth On Course program at no additional charge when they play their first yearly Junior Open Series Event/Mini-Open Series Event.

Non-First Tee Participants:
9-Hole tournament: $20
6-Hole tournament: $10

When does registration close for each event?

Registration closes 4 days prior to the event.

When are tee times sent out?

Tee times will be released via email typically 3 days prior to the event.

What is the refund policy?

If the course becomes unplayable due to weather conditions, the tournament committee may issue vouchers to be used at another time during the year. If a player needs to withdraw, the player can do so up to 48 hours in advance to receive a voucher towards another First Tee Junior Open event. No voucher will be issued if a player withdraws within 48 of the event or fails to show.

What should my child wear?

Please dress in appropriate golf attire, no denim / gym clothing allowed.

What time should my child get to the course?

Please arrive 30-45 minutes before your tee time to check-in and warm up.

Players and caddies will need to be at the first tee of the golf course 10 minutes before their tee time and are expected to walk and carry or push their clubs.

 

What is the Links FORE Fun Division?

Just want to have fun and not worry about a score?  Enter our Links Fore Fun Division where no scorecard has to be turned in!  Simply have fun, pick up when you want to and enjoy the course.   Be sure to choose this option when you register.  No prizes will be awarded in this division.

Will spectator carts be available?

Most likely!  Most courses will charge a nominal fee (approximately $20-$25) to rent a golf cart as a spectator for our 9-Hole events.  Feel free to call ahead to be sure these will be available.  Please  stay on cart paths/rough and do not let anyone under the age of 16 drive the golf cart.
